Radiation can be curative
Major issues:
Only curative if all sites of tumor can be radiated
Normal tissues limit dose that can be given
Many tumors have metastasized even at diagnosis
Solutions:
External Beam :
Spare normal tissues using beam localizing procedures
(conformal RT, adaptive treatment for movement, gamma knife)
Brachytherapy: Implant radioactive “seeds”
to area of tumor
Radioisotopic: For non-localized tumors, deliver radiation only
to tumors using a targeted molecule linked to a radioistope
